Why I Love Sixth Graders

Just a quick post to remember two funnies that happened today in class.

1. I had a young man raise his hand to ask if he could please move because the person he was sitting beside was "pesternizing" him.

2. After playing TCAP review games today where the prize for getting the most correct answers was a fun-size Snickers bar, and after watching so many students sell their soul by cheating to win that fun-size bar, I proceeded to give a lecture!

(The background is that we were all standing in a circle with individual dry-erase boards, I asked the questions, they wrote the answers, and if they were correct they continued to stand, and if they were incorrect they sat down.)

I explained I was so proud of the students that would write an incorrect answer and just quietly sit down. And how disappointed I was in those I saw looking at others boards for the correct answer, or those who were waiting to see another board once I asked them to hold the boards up and quickly jotting an answer down. I explained how they were sacrificing their integrity for a bite of chocolate! Etc. (I can go on and on sometimes!)

What was so funny was that I must have struck several nerves because we had several attacks of consciences! What happened next were about 10 confessionals!! Some I had never seen cheating and would never have guessed that they had cheated!!

But I laughed so hard when after one confession implicated two other students in a group cheating ring, one of the other students yelled out

"Way to go D., you let the bat out of the cave!"

(More background is that I have a book of idioms and I try to see how many I can fit in to my speaking, have the students point them out, and then we read about the origin of them.
So this student thought he was using the idiom--letting the cat out of the bag!!!!)

This was the first batch with ham!

And finally what would a post from me be without a fattening Pioneer Woman recipe and picture...so here is tonight's supper...along with a salad!!!

This was the second batch with hot pepper cheese!
