Why I Love Sixth Graders

Today was a busy one at PMS. It was packed full of activity! We had grade level meetings, PLC meetings and I had the Science club for my advanced students after school.

The funniest thing happened as we were conducting an experiment. We were in the science lab and I was explaining the procedure to them. I started by showing them the equipment they would use. I told them they would have to share one stopwatch between all six groups because when I went to Wal-mart to purchase them, they cost $9.00 each. Since I was personally footing the bill for this little activity, buying six of them would have been a little steep! Before I could finish telling them this, all 12 of them had whipped out their cell phones, flipped them open and punched in the STOPWATCH FUNCTION!!!!!

I couldn't believe it! One girl said jokingly--"Mrs. Cole, nine dollars? You're a loser!!"

I sure felt like one!

I also have a sweet story.

We are spending one half of our plan time one day a week with some of our struggling kids. It is sometimes an inconvenience and usually I would rather be doing something else. But today something happened that made it all worth the time.

Today in class we took a quiz that I had spent our last meeting preparing the kids for ahead of time. A couple of them did better than they usually would, but one made a 100! He was thrilled. He called me over and said, with the biggest grin on his face, " Mrs. Cole, I finally know what it is like to be one of the smart kids!"

Love moments like that when you know you're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing.
